Erstes Kapitel
Zur Einleitung
In dem kleinen Marktflecken Y., wo sich jeder Reisende gern so lange
aufhält, als er muß, nämlich so lange als die Post ausbleibt, traf ich in
den Hundstagen des Jahres 1836 zum letztenmal ein. Der Ort ist einer
von denen, wo man nur auf dem Leichenacker erfährt, daß Menschen
darin leben, weil eine Reihe ehrwürdiger Grabsteine, die man nicht
Lügen zu strafen wagt, versichern, daß Menschen darin sterben.
Diesmal kannte ich ihn nicht wieder, und ich würde geglaubt haben, der
Postillon sei fehlgefahren, wenn sich nicht der mir unvergeßliche
Postmeister, eine lange, dürre, windschiefe Figur, die sich scheu und
verlegen in jede Ecke drückt, als ob sie schon durch ihre bloße Existenz
zu beleidigen fürchte, aus der Tür geschoben, und so meine Zweifel
verscheucht hätte. Alle Straßen nämlich, durch die ich kam, waren
gedrängt voll von Leuten; kein Fenster, aus dem nicht mehr Köpfe
hätten herausschauen wollen, als Platz fanden; auf dem Kirchturm
selbst konnt' ich deutlich Hauben und flatternde Schals unterscheiden,
und jedes Gesicht, von der alten, halberblindeten Bettelfrau an, die sich
mühsam mit der rechten Hand auf ihren Stab stützte und mit der linken
die Brille aufsetzte, bis zu dem kleinen weiß gekleideten Mädchen mit

seinen blonden Locken herunter, trug den Ausdruck der gespanntesten
Erwartung. "Was gibt's denn," fragte ich den Postmeister, "ist's
Jahrmarkt heut?"--"Den 16. hujus gewesen. "--"Feiert der Amtmann
oder der Stadtpfarrer das Dienstjubiläum?"--"Herr Pastor primarius
Nothnagel hat's schon gefeiert und ist an den Folgen des Schmauses
