Le pauvre homme raconte qu'il a trouvé l'anneau dans le ventre d'un
poisson, péché par lui, et qu'il dépeçait pour la vente.
Le roi reconnaît aussitôt son anneau, et récompense richement le
pêcheur.
Plus Douchmanta examine l'anneau, plus il sent sa raison s'éclaircir. Il
se rappelle maintenant tout ce qui s'est passé dans le bois.
Un rayon soudain a traversé le cerveau du roi; l'obscurité qui
l'environnait se dissipe, car le vindicatif ermite s'est retiré, sachant que
l'anneau retrouvé suspend son influence sur Douchmanta.
Ainsi, cette femme qu'il a repoussée tout à l'heure, c'était Sacountalâ! Il
l'a livrée au bourreau!
Éperdu, il interroge tout le monde: pour toute réponse, on détourne
tristement la tête. La reine s'avance, et annonce, avec une satisfaction
cruelle, que Sacountalâ a subi sa punition.
Douchmanta, irrité, la secoue avec violence, et fait un geste de menace
terrible; les femmes de la reine se précipitent éplorées, et entourent
Douchmanta, qui ordonne aux bourreaux qui ont emmené Sacountalâ

d'entraîner à son tour la perfide Hamsati.
SCÈNE VIII.
En ce moment une musique céleste se fait entendre. L'apsara Misrakési
descend du ciel, et au fond du théâtre on aperçoit Sacountalâ sur son
bûcher, dont les flammes se changent en fleurs sous la puissante
influence de l'apsara protectrice.
En même temps, des torrents de lumière, où tourbillonnent des génies
bienfaisants, inondent le fond du théâtre; des foules d'apsaras et de
filles célestes apparaissent sur les terrasses les plus élevées du palais.
Sacountalâ radieuse se jette dans les bras du roi, qui tombe à ses pieds
et implore une grâce déjà accordée.
Hamsati, se dégageant des mains de ses gardiens, s'incline devant
Sacountalâ, et vient baiser humblement le bord de son voile. Sacountalâ
lui pardonne.
Douchmanta remet au doigt de Sacountalâ l'anneau royal, qu'elle ne
perdra pas cette fois, et se prosterne devant l'apsara Misrakési, qui
remonte au ciel.
Pas de deux.
