segundo canto--In Pulvis é já de todo transmontano. Inconscientemente, sem dar por tal, levei o castanheiro para a minha terra, e queimei-o no lar saudoso da minha meninice. Tambem eu me queria aquecer a elle, sentar-me ao pé da sua chama...
Engana-se quem entre Os Simples_ e a _Velhice do Padre Eterno descobrir porventura contradi??es. Este lirismo é o reverso d'aquella satira. Aquella indigna??o é o comentario d'esta elegia. O christianismo dos Simples é o innocente e meigo christianismo popular, feito com a ignorancia absoluta do dogma e com a intui??o humana dos Evangelhos. A exegese do povo, na sua rudeza nativa e embrionaria, é por vezes d'uma penetra??o sublime e reveladora.
As minhas antigas opini?es religiosas, em vez de se modificarem, acentuam-se cada vez mais. Redobra em mim, com um desenvolvimento progressivo de misticismo naturalista, a avers?o e a hostilidade á egreja catolica, grosseira formula materialisada do transcendente e divino espirito de Jesus.
Em quanto á tecnica do poema, muitissimo havia que dizer, se esta nota n?o fosse escripta rapidamente, á ultima hora, com o impressor á espera.
A forma poetica encaminha-se á evolu??o final. Horisonte imenso. O pouco que fiz de novo, em tal sentido, n?o deve nada a ninguem. é meu, pertence-me.
E, de passagem, uma ligeira observa??o. Este livro, só hoje dado a publico, é d'ha muito conhecido entre homens de letras e poetas. E valha a verdade exerceu, aqui e alem, ainda inedito, uma certa influencia, que, embora leve, é inegavel e manifesta. Podia apontar, citar. Inutil. Desejo apenas estabelecer o facto, mais nada.
Concluindo: tentei uma obra d'arte, que fosse ao mesmo tempo absolutamente individual, ingenitamente portugueza e vasta e fundamentalmente humana. Alcancei-o? O tempo o dirá.
