d'arbres touffus qui, réunissant leurs hautes branches, formaient
au-dessous d'elles une voûte de verdure à travers laquelle le soleil ne
pourrait pénétrer.
Quelques instants après, le renard passa au galop, suivi de plusieurs
chiens qui aboyaient à tue-tête. L'animal sauta d'un bond dans la coulée,
se faufila à travers la broussaille et disparut.
N'obéissant qu'à son instinct de chasseur, Guigonnet bondit... Le pied
lui glissa... il tomba.
L'instinct qui porte tout homme qui tombe à chercher un point d'appui,
lui fit jeter les mains en avant. Une de ses mains rencontra un objet
velu qu'il prit pour une branche moussue. Il tomba, entraînant avec lui
ce à quoi il se retenait et, en quelques secondes, il fut arrivé au bas de la
coulée.
Un épouvantable grognement retentit aussitôt, et notre ami François se
trouva face à face avec... un ours de la plus belle taille.
Or, son fusil n'était chargé qu'à balle et la balle glisse sur la peau de
l'ours, comme une pierre sur la glace! Il se trouvait en pleine forêt, seul
avec cet animal féroce...
Ma foi! je crois qu'il eut peur.
Heureusement l'ours eut plus peur que lui. Il fit un bond de côté et
s'enfonça sous le bois, en courant aussi vite que lui permettaient les
obstacles semés sur sa route.

Guigonnet me raconta bien d'autres histoires, un jour que je lui avais
offert une bouteille de bon Saint-Julien, au café G... Mais s'il fallait tout
dire, je serais bien embarrassé, et peut-être mes jeunes lecteurs me
traiteraient-ils de..... blagueur!!!
Cet âge est sans pitié.....
Je préfère m'en tenir à l'esquisse ci-dessus.
