Il chancelait. Le capitaine, qui arrivait, dut le soutenir un instant.
--Raymond,--dit-il avec une compassion mal dissimulée,--il ne faut pas
rester ici... Reviens chez moi, mon garçon...
--Non, capitaine,--répondit le jeune matelot avec plus de calme.--Vous
l'avez dit: il ne faut pas rester ici.... La nuit favorisera mon projet....
Demain, je serai loin du Havre.
--Où vas-tu?
--Où Dieu me conduira.... N'est-il pas le maître de nos destinées?
Les deux hommes s'embrassèrent. Raymond jeta un dernier regard vers
la maison, maintenant sombre. Un sanglot déchira sa poitrine.
Puis, pressant une dernière fois la main du capitaine:
--Adieu!...
Et il se perdit dans la nuit.
