aan te raken; de schending, zelfs de onwillekeurige overtreding van dit
verbod wordt met eene soort van excommunicatie gestraft.
Slechts een persoon heeft het recht, vertoogen tot de koningin te richten;
dit is de eerste minister, wiens waardigheid, insgelijks in de zijlijn,
erfelijk is, en die den titel voert van kivalu. Hij deelt de bevelen der
koningin aan de matapules, de dorps- en stamhoofden, mede, die dan
voor de verdere uitvoering hebben te zorgen.
De koningin Amélie vraagt van haar onderdanen geene belasting; zij
leeft van de opbrengst harer landerijen en van de geschenken, die de
inlanders haar geven. De grond is onvervreemdbaar: de koningin
verpacht aan vreemdelingen landerijen voor den tijd van tien jaren,
tegen eene jaarlijksche vergoeding van honderd piasters; die
vergoeding is ook verschuldigd als een vreemdeling land van een
inlander pacht--koopen kan hij het nooit;--maar dan betaalt hij aan den
eigenaar nog bovendien vijf-en-twintig of dertig piasters als huur.
Een paar dagen nadat de koningin, vergezeld van den bisschop en den
eersten minister, bij ons aan boord een bezoek had gebracht, was het
oogenblik van vertrek gekomen. Over de borstwering van het
achterschip geleund, wierp ik een laatsten blik op deze gezegende
eilanden, stralende in den laatsten gloed der haastig dalende zon.
Langzaam zonk de kust weg; spookachtig teekende zich het wrak van
de Lhermitte tegen den witten schuimgordel der riffen. Daar dreunde
een kanonschot door de eindelooze ruimte... dat was het afscheid.
Weldra omving de duisternis onze boot, drijvende op de wateren van
den Stillen-oceaan.
