AMALIA. Vai uneksinut! Ettekö häpeä! Näinhän minä omilla
silmilläni, kuinka te nielasitte myrkyn ja kaaduitte takaperin tuolille ja

AKSEL. Ja kuolin. Kummallista! Ja kuitenkin olen vielä elossa. Tai
epäilettekö, niin koettakaa suontani. Olkaa hyvä, neitiseni! Olkaatte
hyvät, kunnioitettavat naiset!
(Tädit väistyvät hämmästyneinä).
MIINA-TÄTI. Taivaan herra, mitä tämä merkitsee?
STIINA-TÄTI. Ihka elävä! Ei merkkiäkään myrkytyksestä?
MIINA-TÄTI. Aivan raitis ja terve! Amalia, onneton olento, mitä olet
nyt saanut toimeen!
FIINA-TÄTI. Narrata minua vaivaisella jalallani!

AMALIA. Mutta minä vakuutan -- minä -- Antakaa minun selittää.
MIINA-TÄTI. Pois täältä, pois! No, kaikkea sitä pitää kokeakin!
Jumalani, nyt joudumme koko kaupungin pilkaksi! Hyvästi, meidän
täytyy lähteä. Emme tahdo häiritä -- hyvästi, hyvästi!
STIINA-TÄTI. Niin, niin, meidän täytyy lähteä! Antakaa anteeksi, jos
-- hyvästi, hyvästi!
FIINA-TÄTI. Hyvästi, hyvästi! No, tämäkö nyt maksoi vaivan. (Tädit
tunkeilevat ovessa päästäksensä nopeasti ulos) Ai, ai, jalkani, jalkani!

BERTHA. Mutta sanoppas Amalia, kuinka taivaan nimessä olet saanut
kokoon tämmöisen jutun? Oletko ihan hullu?
AMALIA. Minä en ole hullu -- minä en ole saanut kokoon, en niin
mitään, sen tiedät aivan hyvin, vaikka olet olevinasi niin viaton -- ja
minä käsitän kyllä, että olette samassa liitossa. Niin, niin, te olette
