Het europeesche high life doorleeft in Zermatt heerlijke, lachende
dagen. Men heeft alles, wat het hart wenscht, kleine kwaadsprekerijen
en de groote couranten; het fijne, gezellige gesprek van geestrijke
menschen en bij de klauterpartijen de wilde opwinding als bij een
Derby-ren. Ieder morgen heeft, als de zon boven de kerk opgaat, de
plechtigste missa solemnis plaats en het is een vreugde, des avonds met
vermoeide leden en verbrande aangezichten terug te keeren van de
bergtochten. Dan vliegen de namen Dufourtop, Theodul, Dentblanche,
Mont Cervin, Lyskamm, Verrapas, Macugnaga door de rijen der
terugkeerenden en klinken door de gangen der hotels, zooals in een stad
de namen der beste restaurants.
Maar één zekerheid is toch ook een heerlijkheid in Zermatt, dat is het
bewustzijn, dat men als men wil, met den eersten den besten trein weg
kan komen, als men er genoeg van heeft. Als men die zekerheid niet
had, zou ieder vreemdeling het wel willen uitschreeuwen van verlangen
naar de wijde ruimten. Na een paar weken krijgt men een bedrukkend
gevoel tusschen die bergreuzen, en men kan het haast niet langer stellen
zonder een wijden horizon en een vriendelijk landschap.
De overmacht der natuur, die in dit dal zoo luide spreekt, stemt den
mensch tot zwijgen en melancholie.
