Description:
QubicGames' latest effort 3D Rally is an attempt to cash in on the latest boom of 3D mobile games. As soon as a '3D' is added to the title, the game automatically becomes more attractive, new, awesome, right? Wrong. Just because it's 3D doesn't mean it's good...
In 3D Rally, the actual racing you will do is minimal. Instead of racing against other vehicles, or speeding around the corners, you will be slowly trying to navigate your way around the courses without any competition whatsoever. Take as long as you like, it really doesn't matter. It plays like any other racing game, with 2 to accelerate, 8 to reverse and 4 and 6 being used to turn. Yawn.
The controls are really what bring this game down, it's simply too hard to control. These should've been tweaked, as I'm pretty damn sure it wasn't just because of the handling of the monster truck I was driving (what other game have you ever played where first-up the only drivable vehicle is a monster truck?). Not only do you drive slowly, but when you go to turn you'll find yourself having to hold down the button for a ridiculous amount of time to turn. Unresponsive, unrealistic, and should've definitely been fixed in testing.
While the game has a decent number of courses, 8, these courses are pretty uninspired and are bland at best. It's not all bad, they have some obstacles and can be challenging, but when there isn't much reason to race in the first place (it isn't fun), the number of courses is simply a statistic.
The graphics in 3D Rally SHOULD be awesome, but in reality they are not very good at all. On the surface they are 3D, tick, but drive closely to any scenery or in fact anything in the course at all and you will notice just how ugly this game is. Not only is one-third of your screen blocked by your dashboard, which is a total waste of space, but the models are so jaggy and unattractive that it really puts you off playing. To me, 3D is good but only if it is done well and I would've much preferred a less ambitious but much smoother looking game. The draw distance is also unimpressive, you'll find yourself from time to time driving into what looks like empty space which quickly turns into a bunch of trees. The sound is slightly better, with some decent music to be heard, but nothing very memorable and the choice of tunes could've been better.
3D Rally ends up just feeling like a bad invest of time considering the wealth of better options already available. Pick it up if you must have another racing game and have plenty of cash to burn, but for everyone else it's simply not worth it.
