The following e-text of Mommsen's Roemische Geschichte contains
some (ancient) Greek quotations. The character set used for those
quotations is a modern Greek character set. Therefore, aspirations are
not marked in Greek words, nor is there any differentiation between the
different accents of ancient Greek and the subscript iotas are missing as

Auflage Die neue Auflage der 'Roemischen Geschichte' weicht von der
frueheren betraechtlich ab. Am meisten gilt dies von den beiden ersten
Buechern, welche die ersten fuenf Jahrhunderte des roemischen Staats
umfassen. Wo die pragmatische Geschichte beginnt, bestimmt und
ordnet sie durch sich selbst Inhalt und Form der Darstellung; fuer die
fruehere Epoche sind die Schwierigkeiten, welche die Grenzlosigkeit
der Quellenforschung und die Zeit- und Zusammenhanglosigkeit des
Materials dem Historiker bereiten, von der Art, dass er schwerlich
andern und gewiss sich selber nicht genuegt. Obwohl der Verfasser des
vorliegenden Werkes mit diesen Schwierigkeiten der Forschung und
der Darstellung ernstlich gerungen hat, ehe er dasselbe dem Publikum
vorlegte, so blieb dennoch notwendig, hier noch viel zu tun und viel zu
bessern. In diese Auflage ist eine Reihe neu angestellter
Untersuchungen, zum Beispiel ueber die staatsrechtliche Stellung der
Untertanen Roms, ueber die Entwicklung der dichtenden und bildenden
Kuenste, ihren Ergebnissen nach aufgenommen worden. Ueberdies
wurden eine Menge kleinerer Luecken ausgefuellt, die Darstellung
durchgaengig schaerfer und reichlicher gefasst, die ganze Anordnung
klarer und uebersichtlicher gestellt. Es sind ferner im dritten Buche die
inneren Verhaeltnisse der roemischen Gemeinde waehrend der
Karthagischen Kriege nicht, wie in der ersten Ausgabe, skizzenhaft,

sondern mit der durch die Wichtigkeit wie die Schwierigkeit des
Gegenstandes gebotenen Ausfuehrlichkeit behandelt worden. Der billig
Urteilende und wohl am ersten der, welcher aehnliche Aufgaben zu
loesen unternommen hat, wird es sich zu erklaeren und also zu
entschuldigen wissen, dass es solcher Nachholungen bedurfte. Auf
jeden Fall hat der Verfasser es dankbar anzuerkennen, dass das
oeffentliche Urteil nicht jene leicht ersichtlichen Luecken und
Unfertigkeiten des Buches betont, sondern vielmehr wie den Beifall so
