Il y a longtemps que je désirais voir publier en français une traduction
complète et uniforme de mes oeuvres.
Jusqu'ici, moins heureux en France qu'en Allemagne, je n'ai pu être
connu des lecteurs français qui ne sont pas familiarisés avec la langue
anglaise que par des traductions isolées et partielles, publiées sans mon
autorisation et sans mon contrôle, et dont je n'ai tiré aucun avantage
personnel.
La présente publication m'a été proposée par MM. Hachette et Cie et
par M. Ch. Lahure, dans des termes qui font honneur à leur caractère
élevé, libéral et généreux. Elle a été exécutée avec le plus grand soin, et

les nombreuses difficultés qu'elle présentait ont été vaincues avec une
habileté, une intelligence et une persévérance peu communes. Elle a
surtout été dirigée par un homme distingué, qui possède parfaitement
les deux langues, et qui a réussi de la manière la plus heureuse à
reproduire en français, avec une fidélité parfaite, le texte original, tout
en donnant à sa traduction une forme élégante et expressive.
Je suis fier d'être ainsi présenté au grand peuple français, que j'aime et
que j'honore sincèrement; à ce peuple dont le jugement et le suffrage
doivent être un but d'ambition pour tous ceux qui cultivent Les Lettres;
à ce peuple qui a tant fait pour elles, et à qui elles ont valu un nom si
glorieux dans le monde.
Cette traduction de mes oeuvres est la seule qui ait ma sanction. Je la
recommande en toute humilité respectueuse, mais aussi en toute
confiance, à mes lecteurs français.

Address of the english author to the french public.
I have long been desirous that a complete French translation of the
books I have written should be made, and should be published in an
uniform series.
Hitherto, less fortunate in France than in Germany, I have only been
known to French readers not thoroughly acquainted with the English
language, through occasional, fragmentary and unauthorized
translations over which I have had no control, and from which I have
derived no advantage.
The present translation of my writings was proposed to me by Messrs.
L. Hachette and Co. and Ch. Lahure in a manner equally spirited,
liberal, and generous. It has been made with the greatest care, and its
many difficulties have been combated with unusual skill, intelligence

and perseverance.
It has been superintended, above ail, by an accomplished gentleman,
perfectly acquainted with both languages, and able, with a rare felicity,
to be perfectly faithful to the English text, while rendering it in elegant
and expressive French.
I am proud to be so presented to the great French people, whom I
sincerely love and honour, and to be known and approved by whom
must be an aspiration of every labourer in the Arts, for which France
has done so much, and in which she has made herself renowned
through the world.
This is the only edition of my writings that has my sanction. I humbly
and respectfully, but with full confidence, recommend it to my French
readers.
