manuscrits domestiques, une quantité considérable de passages énon?ant non seulement le prix des grains, des bestiaux et des autres produits agricoles, mais celui des marchandises les plus usuelles, d'un grand nombre d'ustensiles de ménage, d'outils, des objets d'habillement, des matériaux de construction, enfin le salaire de la main-d'oeuvre dans les circonstances les plus diverses et pour ainsi dire à toutes les dates successives de la période de quatre siècles au cours de laquelle il nous est permis de nous aider de ces documents. A la suite de constatations d'un certain intérêt, résultant de notes puisées dans nos livres de raison, M. Victor Duruy appelait, il y a trois ans, au Congrès de la Sorbonne, l'attention toute particulière des travailleurs sur l'importance considérable de ces registres pour l'étude d'une question des plus complexes, des plus controversées et des plus obscures: celle de la valeur réelle de l'argent aux diverses époques. Il est certain que les témoignages si répétés, si rapprochés, si variés dans leur objet, de nos manuscrits, offrent les données les plus sérieuses pour la solution de ce problème, d'un égal intérêt pour l'archéologue, l'historien et l'économiste.
Nous arrêterons ici une démonstration qui, peut-être, n'avait pas besoin d'être faite. Il nous a paru cependant qu'elle n'était pas absolument inopportune. Nous croyons avoir établi, par ce qui précède, l'importance des registres domestiques pour l'étude de l'archéologie et des matières qui s'y rattachent de la fa?on la plus directe et la plus étroite. Souhaitons, en finissant, que de nouvelles découvertes viennent augmenter dans un bref délai la collection, déjà si riche et si précieuse, de nos livres de raison fran?ais, et en particulier de nos registres limousins.
