A la suite de constatations d'un certain int��r��t, r��sultant de notes puis��es dans nos livres de raison, M. Victor Duruy appelait, il y a trois ans, au Congr��s de la Sorbonne, l'attention toute particuli��re des travailleurs sur l'importance consid��rable de ces registres pour l'��tude d'une question des plus complexes, des plus controvers��es et des plus obscures: celle de la valeur r��elle de l'argent aux diverses ��poques. Il est certain que les t��moignages si r��p��t��s, si rapproch��s, si vari��s dans leur objet, de nos manuscrits, offrent les donn��es les plus s��rieuses pour la solution de ce probl��me, d'un ��gal int��r��t pour l'arch��ologue, l'historien et l'��conomiste.
Nous arr��terons ici une d��monstration qui, peut-��tre, n'avait pas besoin d'��tre faite. Il nous a paru cependant qu'elle n'��tait pas absolument inopportune. Nous croyons avoir ��tabli, par ce qui pr��c��de, l'importance des registres domestiques pour l'��tude de l'arch��ologie et des mati��res qui s'y rattachent de la fa?on la plus directe et la plus ��troite. Souhaitons, en finissant, que de nouvelles d��couvertes viennent augmenter dans un bref d��lai la collection, d��j�� si riche et si pr��cieuse, de nos livres de raison fran?ais, et en particulier de nos registres limousins.
