Description:
For some reason, every game seems to have a back story these days, with pretty cut scenes to match. Hover Zone, set well in the future, is no exception, although what you really need to know is that it's a hover-board racing game with occasional physical violence towards your opponents. It's a very competent effort, too, running on just about every single Series 60 device out there.

The hover board tracks are elevated far above the ground, giving you added incentive for not 'falling off the edge', although actually coming off doesn't actually kill you, it merely sets you back in your bid to win each race. In the full version, you get a choice of four characters, three worlds and 18 increasingly tortuous tracks, with each only being unlocked by your winning a race on the previous one, a good system for keeping the gameplay interesting.

There's great configurability, from turning down (or off) the rather repetitive digital soundtrack to defining exactly which keys you'd like to use to control your character, including one for slowing down (essential if you don't want to fall off when the tracks get tighter), one for punching the lights out of any opponent you chance across (though don't forget they'll be doing the same to you, given half a chance) and one for activating one of your limited supply of 'nitro boosts' (think Knight Rider here!).

The graphics are pretty throughout, although the choice of transparent tracks does mean that the painted backdrops show through and can distract when the action gets going. There's (in theory) a 3-player option, via Bluetooth, although I didn't try this, what with the AAS office being rather (ahem) virtual...
